This course is designed for the individual worker and is offered only through eLearning. The training is divided into separate modules that can be completed at your own pace, and the full program takes on average two to three hours to complete. This course gives a basic overview of various health and safety topics, and students are tested for 100% mastery of content. This program has become a pre-entry requirement for many construction industry work sites.  Black Gold students can access this course and certification at no cost.  This course covers many of the same outcomes as HCS3000. The CSTS2020 course qualifies for 0.5 BCRSP Certificate maintenance points. (CPM 10231)

Description:

The Foundations in Industry Workplace Safety course is designed to provide students with a foundational understanding and awareness of the legislative requirements and responsibilities under the following seven industry standard safety courses including: H2S Alive, Confined Space, WHMIS 2015, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Ground Disturbance, Detection and Control of Flammable Substances, and Fall Restraint Systems.

WHMIS 2015 course with certification is offered for free through Safety in Schools (https://www.safetyinschools.ca/). Students who achieve a minimum of 80% on their final course test are awarded a valid, industry-recognized certificate immediately upon completion of a the course.

Course Description: (non-credit)

This 2 hour course was developed by Gemini and well-known, highly respected industry professionals. Safety in Schools certificates are designed to easily and inexpensively obtain essential training that leads towards recognized certifications. University of Calgary students completing a total of 45 hours or more training will be credited 30 hours of elective course credit toward the U of C Health, Safety and Environmental Certificate program.

The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) has aligned with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) to reflect elements of an United Nations initiative. The updated WHMIS program is Canadian legislation that ensures all workers are informed about the chemicals and other hazardous materials they use, or may be exposed to.

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Determine your responsibilities and the responsibilities of your Employer and your Suppliers,
  • Protect yourself from Hazardous Materials by being able to identify and interpret Supplier Labels,
  • Distinguish between the need for and use of Supplier and Workplace Labels,
  • Describe the purpose of Safety Data Sheets and be able to use them accordingly, and
  • Identify the appropriate PPE by reading a Label or SDS.
